Trump may well be a buffoon, but he is carving out a significant piece of the American political pie for himself and others like him, which will lead inevitably to a split in the Republican Party. This could well lead to a decade of Democratic power as the angry white men split and the Party of Lincoln goes in search of another story. Watch this space.

His anti-Muslim guff last night but reinforces the shift away from the mainstream. We saw the same move in France at the weekend and this morning, meanwhile Boris Johnson is saying that the UK should do deals with Putin and Assad. The ground is shifting.
